For the last two years, Buganda Kingdom has held an annual Kabaka Birthday Run to commemorate the Kabaka’s birthday and at the same time as a flag bearing fundraising vehicle towards the fistula eradication project run by the Kitovu Hospital.
From 2014, the momentum has been sustained by generous donations from over 20 Corporate Organizations led by Airtel Uganda and other friends of Buganda Kingdom like Rwenzori Water, Vision Group, CBS Radio Vita foam, Event Warehouse, Post Bank, Pride Microfinance, Tullow Oil, Samona Products, Hospitals, Clinics and Ambulance Services, KCCA and other individuals, who have given their time, professional and technical support, personal resources and determination towards organising the run.
The response has been humbling from people of all lifestyles. In 2014, 10,000 runners participated and 50m/= was donated towards the project. In 2015, the numbers doubled to 20,000 runners and 70m/= was given to Kitovu Hospital.
What began as a celebration of the Kabaka’s birthday, shared with enthusiasm among friends of Buganda Kingdom and the corporate community has since given mothers a new lease on life and a reason to smile and live a normal life.
The third edition will be held on 10th April, 2016 at Lubiri Palace, Mengo. Routes to run include 5km, 10km, and 21km.
