The late AK 47 hit song “Ebaluwa” brings back memories when we learnt prose and poetry just to impress. We wrote letters with passion like Sejjusa and Father Mulaasa. We expressed our deepest heart desires by arranging letters of the alphabet. We really don’t need to know who alphabet is!
We waited in suspense for the reply. We read the letters with blankets over our heads. The one who received the most letters was considered the alpha male. To get some respect, some wrote letters addressed to themselves and posted in the town. Selling scented writing pads was a thriving business. Those with great calligraphy, the poets and the business kept the romance alive. It was self sustaining win-win situation.
“I wrote a letter to my girl but on the way to school, I dropped it/ Somebody must have picked it up and put it in his pocket”, AK sings in the chorus. He expresses envy of the guy who made off with his most lethal possession. The one worth declaring as wealth at anti corruption court.
He sings in a carefree style with youthful energy and bravado. He mixes our beautiful sweet past into a catchy dancehall hit.
This is a dedication to all our high school sweethearts. You were the pioneers of this unending love journey. Since then, all we left on the love paths is debris of broken hearts and shattered dreams. However, the heart is circumcised and sharpened by pain. Thank you.
