DJ Michael aka King Micheal of the “Kiri OK” fame is riding high upcountry. The faded singer is a huge star and attraction in West Nile and South Sudan and frequently holds massive shows in those places. We have been informed that after a sell out show in Nebbi town, where he is treated like a king of sorts, several of the home bred Alur musicians approached him for that “dream collaboration”.
Feeling flattered by their admiration, he asked two of the singers identified as King Injah and another popular singer in the area to each pay him Ugx 5M for the collabo.
The artists shocked by the colossal sum tried to bargain for a cheaper deal but Michael kept claiming that they should pay the amount because the collaboration will earn them a BET award and catapult their careers beyond imagination.
“He kept claiming that we shall be performing songs on big stages in Kampala and abroad if we gave him the money but that’s very expensive for now,” a source stated.
Upcoming artists in Northern region remain in the shadows of their counterparts in the city. Successful singers include Okori Moses aka Coco Finger who dumped singing in Luo and changed to English and Luganda to appeal to a more affluent audience. Also the late Lumix aka The Don was a key figure in hip-hop circles. PAM award winning duo 2 Stars have since gone separate ways. Bosmic Otim is said to be more popular in Sudan. This leaves the Northern region a hotbed for fading stars like Dj Michael, Clever J who frequently hold their shows.
However all is not lost as more artists are producing quality music like O.J Maxwell’s “Fireman” is enjoying rotation on NTV and other top stations.
