Glenn Frey, a founding member of US rock band The Eagles, has died at the age of 67.

His death was caused by complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia.

The guitarist had been battling health issues in recent months and had surgery for intestinal issues in November.

A statement released on the Eagles’ official website from the Frey family and band members says: “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”

Band mate Don Henley has said: “He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken.

“We built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But Glenn was the one who started it all.”

Tributes to the star poured in on social media with comedian and actor Steve Martin posting: “MT: Shocker. My friend from the early days, and important member of Eagles, has died. We loved you, Glenn Frey.”

One Direction star Niall Horan paid tribute to the singer tweeting: ‘”These cloudy days, make you wanna cry. It breaks your heart when someone leaves and you don’t know why ” Glenn Frey’ lyrics from the band’s single “No More Cloudy Days”

American singer-songwriter Bette Midler also tweeted about the star’s passing saying: “Glenn Frey, founding member of the Eagles, a band I just loved, has died. His songs, those sounds, perfectly captured those days. 70s LA…”

Captain America star Chris Evans thanked the Eagles frontman simply posting: “Thank you Glenn Frey. Thank you. RIP”

Frey was a key member of the band and co-wrote many of their biggest hits including “Take It Easy,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Lying Eyes,” “Desperado,” and the bands most famous track “Hotel California”.
