Cristiano Ronaldo will be spending the next five years and possibly will end up retiring at Spanish giants, Real Madrid. The Portuguese star agreed to a new 3-year contract extension with the Madrid based team on Sunday.
Spanish newspaper El Pais first reported that the deal will run until 2018 and this makes Ronaldo the best paid player in the world. Ronaldo could be earning around 20 million euros a season.
“It is a privilege for me to continue with this club. It is just like my first day here. I am going to continue with the same spirit of sacrifice and give everything for the shirt. It is a special day for me, I want to thank the president for making this happen and the fans who continue to support me. Maybe I will stay here until the end of my career. This club is the biggest in the world and I am extremely happy,” he told a press conference.
The speculation of Ronaldo’s move started at the end of the 2011-12 season, when the Portuguese captain said that he was “sad” in September last year because of the lack of support from the club in his quest to win the Balon d’Or from Messi who has won it for the past 4 years.
The contract renewal has also closed all doors for Manchester United who were trying to sign the former star back to Old Trafford at the end of his contract in 2015. Ronaldo said, “I will be honest. I was in Manchester for six years and they gave me many things that I will never forget, but United is now in the past.”
Ronaldo also made it clear that he will possibly end his career at Madrid. He said, “Now I am at home, my family is here and I am happy. I respect all the other clubs but my objectives are here and to play until possibly the end of my career. You never know what will happen in the future, but I want to be here for five more years and win things.”
Cristiano Ronaldo signed the extension of his contract in the Santiago Bernabeu’s Board Room accompanied by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, members of the board of directors, and his manager, Jorge Mendes.
The Real Madrid star player, who renews his commitment to the club for the next five seasons, received a replica of La Cibeles and was photographed with the European Cups after signing his contract.
