KCCA FC players celebrate their victory in the Independence Cup

By Robert Kayindi James

Antonio Flores’ side, Sports Club Villa lost yet another chance to lift a crown after falling to Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club by 4-2 on penalties in this year’s Independence Cup.

At the heart of Kampala, the two Azam Uganda Premier League giants played to a goalless draw in normal time before going for a penalty shootout at Nakivubo stadium.

Much as the game was quite entertaining to watch, both sides failed to score with Yasin Mugabi doing most of the donkey work for the Kasasiro Boys as he saved both Umar Kasumba and Karim Ndugwa’s close efforts.

For the spectators in the stands, the game painted a clear picture of what to expect when the ‘Yellows’ meet the ‘Blues’ in the league.

Misi Katende was the first to disappoint the Jogoos with his shot going high over the bar before KCCA’s custodian saved Sulaiman Achero’s effort.

Umaru Kasumba who is yet to regain his confidence in the league and left back, Isaac Muleme scored for Villa while Farouk Matovu, Owen Kasule, Captain Tom Matisko and Habibu Kavuma converted all their efforts that won them the Independence Day trophy.

The victory was KCCA’s second within three days having beaten Kyambogo by 4-0 in a friendly match.

The loss was SC Villa’s third at a cup final this year, the first two coming against Maroons and Express Football Club in two different Idi Cups.
