30 Days of Flavia Tumusiime: Life changed after my father died

Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On day 25, she posted:

“I always get asked what family I come from or what schools I attended. Am guessing people attribute success to your beginnings. We assume that if you come from a very wealthy background, you have a better headstart in life, well that might have some truth, but a humble start can also elevate you.

I was born into a comfortable life but after the death of my father, alot had to change. I used to look at my friends in school and imagine what their lives were like. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy with my life but I had some curiosity.

One time I asked one of my peers who always lived large..dressed to the nines and had all sorts of flashy gifts, how she managed to keep up. She told me her parents took care of her, but the day I visited their home, that didn’t add up. She later said she had to keep up with the cool kids at campus so she had to survive. I didn’t knock her hustle but I told her she wasn’t being true to herself.

If you fake it once, you must fake it forever. This scared me, you know many of us walk and talk a certain way that represents a false person. Dont be ashamed of your background to the point where you lose who you are.”
