Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On day 18, she posted:
“I hate when people say you should be the bigger person, if someone has done you wrong, that you should not return hate with hate. But its the right thing to do.
I was once told a story about a workmate of mine, that she had made a nasty comment about me to a mutual friend. What hurt me was the fact that her and I had never had enough conversations for her to draw any conclusions about me. I was so angry and I lashed out, I told many people about it and I was hoping to find a reason why she was being like that towards me. Many advised that I confront her and ask her about it, then one of my friends suggested I be kind instead…what????
Hmmm, she said, many people say alot behind your back, some of them are even those close to you, if you confront everyone, you wont manage the world.
Fast forward to another job, some people went and suggested to my bosses that I was not fit for the job and that I shouldn’t be given a chance. I chose to try the kindness route. I knew who had spoken ill of me and I went ahead to smile and be polite even if I was so angry. Slowly with time I saw the guilt they had wear off and they instead became my allies at work.
See, life is not so rosy sometimes, the one smiling at you could be thinking of ways to slap you in their mind. But you can’t confront the whole world, learn to move on from such issues and as hard as it is…kill them with kindness, let karma deal with their bitterness not you. “
