Having failed to get that one required win at the Rugby Africa 1A tournament, the Uganda under-19 national men’s rugby team have dropped to a lower tier following a poor performance during their trip to Harare, Zimbabwe.

The lads who gained promotion to 1A last year in Kampala, lost to Namibia and neighbors of Kenya over the weekend to seal their relegation to a lower tier even when, coach Dennis Etuket remains a bit optimistic.

“I am happy with the boys’ performance. Many of them were just called from school and were impressive. The team had up to 17 debutants, meaning that majority of the boys were playing at this level for the first time,” Dennis Etuket told Daily Monitor.

Uganda lost to Namibia in their opener 49-12 and therefore need to beat Kenya in the playoff but still couldn’t make it happen as they lost 21-5. Namibia pipped hosts Zimbabwe 34-32 in the final to book a place at next year’s Junior World Rugby trophy that will be held in Manchester, England.

Results (SEMIS) Namibia 49-12 Uganda Zimbabwe 25-17 Kenya Relegation playoff: Kenya 21- 5 Uganda Final: Zimbabwe 32-34 Namibia.
