The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) is in mourning following the death of former Uganda Cranes hero, Manasi Owiny.

According to the local football governing body, Owiny passed away on Monday, 13th July in Lira after being hospitalized with excruciating pain following an accident that he suffered a few years ago that affected his spinal cord.

“We are sad to lose a football icon and former Cranes star who served his country unselfishly. These are trying moments for the football fraternity following the death of Mr. Manasi Owiny. FUFA extends its sympathies to his family, friends and football fraternity,” reads Eng. Moses Magogo’s condolence message on behalf of FUFA on the federation’s website.

Owiny passed away at the age of 80 and was part of the Uganda Cranes in the 50s and 60s that also toured England in 1956-some of whom played barefooted against their hosts.
