Have you ever landed on a good piece of art (a good book, canvass, portrait, graffiti..or a good song) and you slap yourself hard in the face, cursing, oozing little venom questioning yourself where you have been all this long? Has it ever occurred to you that as you snore away on your fat ass, a good song is being crafted and peppered with niceness somewhere behind closed doors? This is what happened to me when I landed on The Super Cypher. Well, there has been noise going around about it, but I am not a kind who is easily swayed away by a slight breeze like a light paper bag. I remained unfazed.
Then it dropped. I pushed my chair closer to the fireplace and listened to it. Over and over again, my hand hovering over the repeat button. I was giddy with admiration of the catalogue of artistes on this track. It opens its doors with Ginsu. Much as I love the name, I love her flow, too. There is the way she goes hard on the beat. I say hard not to come off as cuckoo (or corny), but as an attempt to drive my point home. Here is the rub: Ginsu can rap. She is well-heeled with verses and it makes you wonder where such great acts live. On this cypher, you will hear the voices of one of the greatest rappers to ever graced Hip-Hop in Uganda. His name is Play01. He plays with words, I want to think. And indeed, he is a good player of lyricism. Benny Black, he of the dope lines, never disappointed as well.
You might get a slight migraine in trying to fathom and decipher what these lads are hemorrhaging. If niceness had a sound, then it is this cypher. I like the way they transition and leave you wondering who is coming next. But one-by-one, they wear a hat and make a statement. I must admit, all folks performed to the best of their talents. No lackluster. No half-baked performance. And the song loses me when Golola Moses comes on board with unbridled vigor and vivacity. It’s something you won’t wake up to everyday. It’s unusual. And whoever dragged Golola on this cypher, surely, had a working medulla. Enygma was his usual self. He has never disappointed. At least over the years I have listened to this masked soul. However, there is the way The Sphynx shuts its doors. Like she was the cul-de-sac. Like she was the last stanza to a love song. And she did it nicely. Then, if you’re keen enough, you will realize that I haven’t talked about the beat of this super cypher because, you know what, I am still grappling with the right adjective to use. But, for now, I will leave you with this: It was epic!
