Sekagya vows not to play for the Cranes again

Ibrahim Sekagya

By James Robert Kayindi

Former national football team captain and New York Red Bulls defender Ibrahim Sekagya has vowed never to return and play for the Uganda Cranes as rumors have previously alleged all over the media.

News broke last week on Thursday as the Uganda Cranes prepared to take on the Black Stars of Ghana that the former Cranes skipper had been called out of retirement to make a return to the national team.

He, however, doesn’t deny the fact that the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has for a while been trying to get him out of retirement but he stuck to his decision. He claims he has only been available to try and motivate the team and will always be.

“I cannot just play again. It will be unfair to the current team set-up. I made it clear to Fufa that I will always honour their invitations to help motivate the team. I am retired and more so I cannot start the campaign halfway. This is their (current team) chance and I don’t want to be taking any praise for something I haven’t helped achieve in any way”, reads a statement on Supersport.com.

It should be remembered that the New York Red Bulls player went into retirement in 2011 after that infamous 0-0 draw with the Harambe Stars of Kenya at the Namboole stadium that saw the Cranes fail to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He served the national team for a period of about 12years.
