ROBIN VAN PERSIE warned Chelsea that Manchester United can catch them in the Premier League title race – but was then branded “stupid” by Louis van Gaal.
Van Persie, captain as Wayne Rooney sat in the stands, rescued a point for United with an added time equaliser at Old Trafford to stop Chelsea going six points clear at the top of the table .
But the Man United striker received a ticking off from manager Van Gaal for throwing his shirt into the air in celebration – and earning a yellow card in the process.
Despite his delight at the equaliser in United’s biggest test of the season, Van Gaal said: “He did a stupid reaction after the goal.
“You can be excited, but you don’t have to pull your shirt off, because then you have a yellow card. It’s not so smart.”
Van Persie said his reaction was borne out of relief after a frustrating afternoon when he was twice denied by Chelsea keeper Thibault Courtois and failed to stop Didier Drogba’s goal for Chelsea after straying off his ‘sentry duty’ on the near post, the ball actually skimming in off his head.
