As we speak, one of the top city tycoons, SK Mbuga has been barred from leaving the country by URA for defaulting over 200 million shillings in tax arrears.
According to a memo released to the Internal Affairs department, Miss Doris Akol the Ag. Commissioner General stated that; “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 105 (1) of the Income Tax Act Cap 340, I hereby certify that the above mentioned person has an outstanding tax liability of UGX. 219,155, 869 and the same continues to attract interest until it is fully paid as per the relevant tax laws. You are therefore requested to prevent the said tax defaulter from leaving Uganda until he pays the aforesaid tax liability.”
Its reported that the sum was accrued starting 25th November, 2013 when an administrative estimated income tax assessment was raised. The assessment required Mbuga to pay sh192, 241, 990, an amount that should have been paid on January 9, 2014. He has failed to comply and since then the sum has been accumulating.
Efforts to get Mbuga to comment on this are still futile.
