The countdown has come to two days to kick off of the Cecafa championship; Uganda’s representatives at the forthcoming Kagame Cup, KCCA FC has released the squad for the tournament yesterday. KCCA’s 20man squad includes its new acquisitions, six defenders including Richard Kasagga who is on loan from Kiira Young, eight midfielders and four strikers. Nine of the 20 man squad are new acquisitions who include ex-URA FC and SC Villa custodian Yasin Mugabi, former Express FC midfielder Rogers Lukwiya and prodigal son Brian Umony who returns to the club after Tanzania’s outfit Azam FC didn’t renew his contract.
The team will be leaving today evening by Rwanda Air for Kigali after there was a change in travel plans. According to the vice Chairman Allan Ssewanyana, the team was supposed to leave for Kigali yesterday evening but due to an unavoidable circumstances they were forced to change their travel plans.Besides the players, ten officials including the technical staff will accompany the team to Kigali.
KCCA FC head into the championship as Uganda’s champions for last season however their reputation in the tournament isn’t so sounnding. They have only managed to lift the Kagame Cup once and that was way back in 1978, the same year in which Uganda last appeared at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Uganda’s 2013-2014 champions will kick off their campaign against KPL champions Gor Mahia who just lost their head coach (Bobby Williamson) to the Harambe stars on Friday at Amahoro stadium, Kigali. They will then face Telecom of Djibouti on 10th, Burundi’s Flambeau before closing the group stage with Rwanda’s APR FC.
