Mike Sekabembe beat Barbados’ Emmanuel Anderson on points (30-27) at the Scottish exhibition and conference center last week in Uganda’s first fight at Glasgow and for the country since Melbourne edition of 2006 that saw him qualify to the quarter finals in which he had to face Ghana’s Haruna Usumanau.
It was yesterday evening when Uganda’s Mike Sekabembe returned back into the ring against Ghana’s Haruna Usumanau in the supper heavy weight challenge. After a long period of play without a knockout, the three match judges crowned Mike Sekabembe as champion which has since seen him qualify for the semifinals that are set to be played on Friday. It was this win that has continued to rise Uganda’s hopes for a medal in boxing since Godfery Nyakana in the 1990 commonwealth games.
Elsewhere, David Musagala qualified to the next stage in the men’s 800 meter race after coming 6th at the end of the run. He however stated that, “I will try to step up my game if am to beat my competitors in the next round”.
Meanwhile, Joyce Chepkiriu won gold in what was termed as a Kenyan clean sweep of the medals in the 10,000meters. Nigerian teenage weightlifter Chika Amalaha was yesterday provisionally suspended from the Commonwealth Games after testing positive in a doping test taken after she won gold in the women’s 53kg category, the Commonwealth Games Federation announced Tuesday.
