CNOOC Uganda recently awarded UGX 31 million in prize money and school support to Hoima’s best performing students in a bid to enhance education standards in its area of operation.
Named “CNOOC Best Performers Award” and inaugurated in July 2012, the awards are aimed at making students in CNOOC Uganda’s area of operation nationally competitive and saw a total of 90 best performers in the last year’s PLE, UCE and UACE awarded.
Awarding the students with the prize money and certificates, Wei Chai, CNOOC Uganda’s Head of Corporate Affairs emphasized that the rewards are meant to motivate students in Hoima and improve the region’s performance nationally.
Hoima district is heading for rapid development, CNOOC Uganda believes that the better our youth are prepared and the education sector transformed, the more all of us shall benefit.
Throughits strong Corporate Social Responsibility, CNOOC Uganda is happy to support this initiative by awarding youth talent and education.
“We wish to make a positive and long lasting contribution to the communities in our area of operation in order to improve livelihoods and for prosperity. We believe that by acknowledging and rewarding the best performing students, we make a positive and long-lasting contribution towards the community where we do business” added Wei.
A total of 30 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UCE) students received Shs 750,000, Shs 500,000 and Shs 375,000 each for the first five best, second seven best and third eight best positions, respectively.
The top 30 Uganda Certificate of Education (O-level) students clustered in the order above, received Shs 500,000, Shs 375,000 and Shs 250,000 each for the best five, second best ten and third best fifteen respectively while the top thirty Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) level students received Shs 375,000, Shs 250,000, and Shs 175,000 each for the best five, second best ten and third best fifteen respectively.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Hon. Hon. Tophus Kaahwa Byagira, Hoima District Woman Member of Parliament lauded CNOOC Uganda for its efforts and reiterated that this move hasultimately sparked off positive competition that will definitely improve performance and subsequently send out a clear message to the entire country.
“We want to enable our students to have the confidence, grit and determination to succeed and today, the 90 students from primary and secondary schools receiving the CNOOC Best Performers Awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements have shown this” added Hon Kaahwa.
The students were selected by the District Education Officer,Hoima District based on the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) results of 2013 with 20 per cent selected from the municipality schools and 80 per cent selected from the rest of the district.
The annual awards will continue in the future as CNOOC Uganda aims to continuously improve the living standards of the communities around Hoima and complement Government efforts of quality education by encouraging students to aim higher.
