Yesterday, singer Moses Ssali more popularly known by his stage name Bebe Cool bashed Ugandan DJ’s, Radio and TV stations that concentrate on playing Nigerian Music other than supporting Ugandan Music. The message that the ‘Cocodiosis’ singer posted on his Facebook wall was not welcomed well by many Ugandan DJs especially XFM’s Deejay Beekay.
Beekay who does the Sweet Sixteen Mix show on Vision Group’s owned XFM Radio station also hit back at Bebe Cool in full force.
“Just because your music isn’t on my or other DJs playlist doesn’t mean you call us out for not supporting Ugandan music. Yes you are popular, but that doesn’t mean me playing your music suddenly your birthright.” He continued to say in response to Bebe Cool’s post, “Instead of complaining, you and other complainants should borrow a leaf from the Nigerians and Jamaicans.”
According to Beekay, Ugandan music lacks quality and artistes like Bebe Cool need to borrow a leaf from renowned Nigerian and Jamaican stars.
“Their secret is simple Quality. Ask Goodlyfe about that. It’s the simple reason they get airplay on BET, MTV, Channel O and other international media and get nominated world over for different awards.” Beekay added.
The DJ noted that he respects Bebe Cool and his craft and acknowledged having seen him from his days in South C where he spent nights in a Lucas’ studio trying to make Uganda’s next big tune; but where is that Bebe Cool he quizzes.
“The one I see today is more concerned with who is talking about you telling people to mind their business. The work you did when you were hungry for music and not cheap scandals has stood the test of time. From “Mikono Juu” to Fire Anthem (even though this was with Bashment crew) those are classics. I can’t say much for what you have now. But what do I know? I’m just a DJ.” Beekay concluded.
Below is Bebe Cool’s response.
“A simple message to a one called DJ beekay, u said u don’t have my songs on your play list coz they r not good for u n that I shud pik a leaf from your choice artist, well I think u need to know that u used to work at SANYU FM and now u work at Xfm. Simple to evaluate, IF U HAD A GOOD PLAY LIST, U WUD STILL BE AT RADIO SANYU. (note beekay u need to learn how to read and digest pipoz statuses then comment). U say am popular, do u think I give out eggs to be popular or do good music? Hoping u even know the difference between fame and popularity. Grow up, when I wrote about playing Ugandan music more than Nigerian music, I was simply calling on PATRIOTS not losers. TO ALL THE OTHER DJS, KINDLY PUSH MORE OF YOURS COZ THESE R U BROTHERS N SISTERS TRYING TO WORK SO HARD, THE LATE PHILLY,ELLY WAMALA, PAUL JOB KAFERO, WERE SUPPORTED AND PUSHED BY HOME PIPO DESPITE QUALITY AND TYPE OF MUSIC. Lastly, when climbing a tree, u don’t start from the leaves, u start from the stem. UGANDA MUSIC HAS COME FROM SO FAR TO BE HERE, AM UGANDAN I WILL FIGHT FOR UGANDAN. No disrespect to Nigeria, am only fighting for my country too. thx”
