Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of over a billion Roman Catholics worldwide, has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed in an official video statement released Monday.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Holy Father was elected Pope in March 2013, becoming the first pontiff from the Americas and the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy.

“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta,” the Vatican’s statement announced.

The Pope had been battling serious health issues in recent months. In February, he was rushed to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a respiratory infection that evolved into pneumonia in both lungs. He also suffered from chronic bronchitis and mild kidney failure.

Pope Francis says priests can now bless same-sex couples.

More recently, he endured an isolated attack of bronchospasm, which led to an episode of vomiting with inhalation and a sudden deterioration in his condition.

His final days were marked by a continued commitment to his pastoral duties, even as his health visibly declined. The Church and faithful around the globe now enter a period of mourning for a Pope remembered for his compassion, reformist spirit, and unwavering message of mercy and inclusion.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements and the papal succession process are expected in the coming days.
