Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya Ordered to Vacate Office Over Rent Dispute

Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, has been instructed to vacate his office premises following a sharp increase in rent, which he and his team claim is politically motivated.

According to Alex Luswa Luwemba, Hon. Ssegirinya’s personal assistant, the landlord issued the eviction notice on December 28, 2024, after raising the monthly rent from UGX 700,000 to UGX 2 million.

The landlord cited increased property rates as the reason for the hike. However, Luswa alleges that the justification is baseless and part of a politically driven agenda to disrupt Ssegirinya’s work.

“The landlord issued a notice toward the end of last year requesting that we vacate the premises by January 7, 2025, after raising the rent. He gave us no time to sort ourselves out,” Luswa explained.

Further investigations by Ssegirinya’s team revealed that certain political actors, in collaboration with brokers, may have orchestrated the eviction. The team believes this is because of the building’s strategic location, which provides easy access to constituents.

Despite the setback, Hon. Ssegirinya remains focused on serving his constituents. He and his team are currently searching for a new office at a more affordable rate of around UGX 400,000 per month.

The move would also allow them to allocate UGX 300,000 toward empowering struggling mothers under the Ssegibox campaign, a program aimed at providing essential supplies and support to vulnerable families.
