Veteran musician Abdul Mulaasi has dismissed rumors about his departure from the Uganda National Musicians’ Federation (UNMF), asserting his continued membership and belief in its mission.
Speaking recently, Mulaasi expressed support for Federation President Eddy Kenzo and the organization’s objectives, despite challenges along the way.
The Federation, established to unite artists and champion causes such as the amendment of the copyright law, has faced criticism for perceived slow progress.
Some members have left, citing dissatisfaction with its pace and tangible achievements. However, Mulaasi has chosen to remain, appreciating its inclusivity and the ongoing efforts to address artists’ mental health and financial empowerment through loans provided by their SACCO.

Mulaasi addressed confusion surrounding his membership during a recent TikTok live session with fellow artist Kabaata. During the session, Kabaata questioned why Mulaasi was soliciting funds for an event despite being part of a Federation that received government funding.
“I replied saying I’m still in the Federation. But when I went to seek financial support, Kenzo said I had left because of my song criticizing the government. It’s that misunderstanding that made people think I left the group, but I’m still very much part of it,” he clarified.
Mulaasi expressed gratitude for the Federation’s initiatives, particularly its focus on inclusivity and mental health awareness for artists.
He remains optimistic about its ability to drive meaningful change in Uganda’s music industry, even as it works to achieve its broader goals, such as the long-awaited copyright law amendment.
