A Pass Criticizes Push for Copyright Law Amendment as “Foolish” Business Approach

A Pass has made a bold statement, calling the push for a copyright law amendment “one of the most foolish ways” to approach the music business.

A Pass

He expressed that his comments aren’t intended to discourage those advocating for the change but rather to provide a different perspective based on his experiences in the music industry.

A Pass, who has been involved in the music scene for years and has heard more songs and features than many artists in Uganda, pointed out that there isn’t much financial gain from such collaborations.

He believes that artists should focus on generating income through streams and live shows rather than relying solely on music royalties and copyright claims.

He also highlighted a critical distinction, noting that music royalties, callback tunes, and streaming earnings are separate entities that don’t necessarily fall under the umbrella of copyright law.

This stands in contrast to the goals of Eddy Kenzo’s Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), which has been advocating for copyright law reforms to better protect and compensate artists.

A Pass’s remarks challenge the narrative that copyright law amendments are the key to improving artists’ earnings.

Instead, he emphasizes the importance of diversifying income streams and focusing on more lucrative avenues like performances and digital streaming.
