In a surprising turn of events, Ugandan artist and multi-talented singer Tadeo Mayega, popularly known as Zex Bilangilangi, has expressed his support for the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) supplementary funding from the government.

This stands in stark contrast to the position taken by his mentor and former boss, Bobi Wine, who vehemently opposed the government’s allocation of UGX 18 Billion to the UNMF, labeling it as a dubious move orchestrated by the federation’s members.

Last week, Bobi Wine, who has also ventured into politics, raised concerns about the legitimacy of the financial support, suggesting that it may be a scheme designed to benefit a select few within the musician’s body.

The statement did not sit well with UNMF, prompting its President, Eddy Kenzo, to respond by advising Bobi Wine to seek counsel from more knowledgeable sources to avoid being misled.

Despite the ensuing debate on social media and in the public domain, Zex Bilangilangi, during a recent television interview, took a divergent stance from his mentor. According to Zex, while money is undoubtedly a necessity for everyone, its value is enhanced when earned through one’s hard work and dedication.

“No one doesn’t need money, but money is more delicious after working to have it. For me, I am a hard worker, and everyone is aware of that,” remarked Zex Bilangilangi.

As the CEO of Geng Geng Music Camp, Zex also expressed his positive outlook on supporting artists and commended the financial support extended by the government to UNMF. He viewed the allocation of UGX 18 Billion as a blessing and an achievement for the federation.

“I have no problem with them receiving that money if they were given. It’s even a blessing for them to be given. Many have tried to request that money, but they failed,” added Zex Bilangilangi.

This public endorsement of the government’s financial support by Zex Bilangilangi adds a nuanced perspective to the ongoing discourse surrounding the UGX 18 Billion allocation, emphasizing the diversity of opinions within the Ugandan music industry.

The contrasting views between Zex and his mentor, Bobi Wine, highlight the complex nature of financial support for artists and the varying perceptions within the artist community regarding such initiatives.
