Ugandan singer and songwriter Zawedde Priscilla alias Azawi has been listed among the African musicians to watch in 2022 by entertainment channel, MTV Base.
In a social media post, MTV Base Africa noted that the “Slow Dancing” singer has got what it takes to take Africa to the rest of the world and is certainly one to keep tabs on.
“The music industry has been buzzing with new talents, major comebacks, vibe lords/queens, spot on collaborations and we’re all here for it! However, there are some really interesting talents you should certainly keep tabs on ‘cause we have a nudge they’ve got what it takes, to take Africa to the world! Here’s a list of #OnestoWatch in 2022,” reads a post on MTV Base Africa Instagram.
Azawi could not hide her excitement upon the recognition. “Glad to be named as one of the artists to watch out for in Africa as of 2022 by MTV Base Africa,” she commented.
The Swangz Avenue-signed singer is one of the only two musicians representing East Africa on the list. The other from the region is Kenyan’s 28-year-old, Wanjiku Kimani a.k.a Femi One.
Azawi broke out in 2020, and has since been on a steady rise. She dropped her debut EP in February 2020 which featured songs like Crazy Lover, Repeat It, Mbinyumirwa and Quinamino.
In October, 2021, she followed it up with her debut ‘African Music’ album which has received critical acclaim and commercial success.
The ‘African Music’ album boasts of over 1.5M streams already on different channels and platforms with her song Ache for you being ranked by apple as one of the best songs of the year 2021.
Most recently, Azawi held a successful northern Uganda tour. She will also, later in the year, be travelling to the United Kingdom and Turkey for a musical and media tour.
