The highly anticipated MTV Africa Music Awards 2021 have been postponed, this website has learnt.
MTV Base made the announcement on social media on Thursday evening.
“MTV Base is postponing the 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards. We will keep fans updated as we have more news,” stated MTV Base.
This comes in response to widespread criticism and calls for cancellation by several users on social media. The award organisers were accused of playing blind to the political tensions in the country as they (social media users) also used the opportunity to highlight the gross human rights violations that marred the recently concluded presidential elections in which the incumbent President Museveni retained his seat.
It appears they have finally given in to the mounting pressure and called off the award ceremony.
This year’s edition was set to be held virtually in Kampala-Uganda on 20th February.
Established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa (Viacom International Media Networks Africa), the awards are aimed at celebrating the most popular contemporary music in Africa.
We will keep you posted.
