By Our Reporter

As a measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by physical exchange of currency notes, MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, on 19th March 2020, implemented a zero charge on all Person to Person (P2P) and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions for a period of 30 days.

In recognition of the continued lockdown period, the zero charge was maintained until 25th May 2020.

In a joint statement released on Tuesday, MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda have announced that they are reinstating the charges effective 26th May 2020.

“All MTN mobile money and Airtel money Person to Person ( P2P) transactions on the same network and Mobile Wallet to bank transactions will be gradually re-introduced at a 50% discount to standard tariffs for a period of 30 days.” The statement read.

“All MoMo/Airtel Money pay transactions between customers and merchants will continue to attract zero transaction charges for the next 30 days,” it further read.

The statement comes at time when lockdown restrictions are being eased with private cars allowed back on roads and shops and restaurants reopening in many areas.

“We thank you for adhering to the guidelines put in place by the government and remain committed to enabling electronic money transactions to mitigate the risk of transmission of the Corona virus.” the statement concluded.
