Cranes sign off with huge Mauritania win

Uganda saw off Mauritania 3-0 as both teams prepared for next week’s Africa Nations Championship (Chan) in a build-up friendly played in Kampala on Thursday.

Brian Majwega, Savio Kabugo and Francias Olaki scored second half goals to hand Micho Sredojevic’s side some boost ahead of the continent’s home-based players’ tournament.

Chan kicks off in South Africa next Saturday but Uganda will not be in action until the following day when they face Burkina Faso. Zimbabwe and Morocco are Cranes’ other poolmates.

Micho had looked to this game played at Namboole Stadium as one to gauge the preparedness of his side and he will have been pleased with especially one of his strikers Olaki getting onto the score sheet.

Kabugo and Richard Kasagga were rarely troubled by the visitors at the back while skipper Denis Guma and Ivan Ntege showed intent both defensively and going forward in the midfield but could not hurt Mauritania as the first period ended goalless.

But a half time introduction of Majwega, who replaced the ineffective Saidi Kyeyune, turned things around; the KCCA winger opening scoring from a free kick.

The second goal also came off Majwega’s corner, headed in by Kabugo for his first international goal midway the second half.

The Cranes then wrapped up the victory from yet another corner by Majwega, which Kasagga directed at goal but Olaki, a second half substitute for ineffectual Joseph Mpande, was on hand to force in a rebound after the defender’s strike was blocked.
