Race for new Singleton golf Challenge champion intensifies as quarter-finals get underway

The dream of claiming the trophy for the first time will be the common denominator for all the eight ‘amateur category’ pairs (16 players) who will take to the green when the quarter-finals of the Singleton Match PlayChallenge get underway this Saturday, May 11 at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Course.

With defending champions Sheila Kesiime and Peace Kabasweka ejected at the third round of the competition last month by Samuel Kato and Charles Odere, it is anyone’s title for Season Three. Yet not even the winners of the inaugural season, Isaac Mariera and John Muchiri, can bid for a second triumph, as their journey was cut short at the same round last month, going down to the determined pair of Andrew Atuhaire and Geofrey Orach.

The elimination of both pairs of former champions means that this year the amateur category of the challenge is yet again certain to get a new pair of champs–just like it was last year when Peace and Sheila won. The prize for the champions is a trip to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January 2020.

In the mouth-watering quarter-final action this Saturday, the pair of Samuel Kato and Charles Odere will face off with yet another ladies team in Martha Babirye and Maureen Okura, who eliminated another much-fancied female team–Gloria Mbaguta and Evelyn Asiimwe. Wendy Angudeye/Doreen Mwesige will take on the winner between Tim Mwanda/Suubi Kiwanuka and Charles Hamya/Joseph Bogera.

In the pros section, the quarter finals will feature Herman ‘Deco’ Mutebi, Fred Wanzala, Robert Happy, Abraham Ainamani, Gerald Kabuye, Herman Mutawe, David Kamulindwa and Ronald Rugumayo. In their battle for the Shs50 million kitty, Mutebi will face Happy, Rugumayo takes on Wanzala, Ainemani challenges Kamulindwa, while Mutawe will lock horns with Kabuye.
