Airtel Uganda has this morning announced the launch of its 4GLTE mobile telecommunications technology. The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the Kampala Serena Hotel and attended by the Minister of ICT Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Airtel Uganda partners and the media.

The upgrade to 4GLTE comes with a significant countrywide investment made by Airtel Uganda in setting up 404 LTE sites in Kampala and 126 sites upcountry. With this new technology, Airtel is now offering subscribers around the country the fastest available speeds as well as an improved experience in internet-based activities such as video conferencing, mobile web access, amongst others.

Addressing the media and various key guests from Uganda’s ICT sector, Mr. V.G. Somasekhar the Airtel Managing Director stated that with the 4G LTE technology, customers will have an overall improved internet experience at the most affordable rates. This investment will further enable digital inclusion in Uganda, he added.

The launch comes just two weeks after Airtel Uganda announced a revision of its data in a bid to remain the most affordable telecommunications company in Uganda.

Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister for ICT congratulated the management and staff of Airtel Uganda upon this momentous achievement. “As government our key responsibility is to provide a conducive environment and good policies for our investors. Such milestones like the one Airtel has attained today is a confirmation that we have always supported and encouraged innovative ICT development models,” he commented.

To join 4G, Airtel Uganda customer will have to swap their 2G, 3G SIM cards to 4G- free of charge. Customers new to the network will buy a 4G SIM from the communicated locations at UGX 2,000 only. The change in SIM cards comes with 4GB free for those swapping their SIM cards and 1GB for new SIM purchases.
