The Naguru based WBS TV station owned by one of the city business men Wavamuno Gordon, has laid off over 60 workers which include journalists and media workers. An insider source tells us that the management of WBS TV is suffering with lots of workers who don’t yield expected results so its carrying out a downsizing exercise to cut down the costs.

With over 180 employees countrywide, WBS TV station management thinks they were not yielding appropriately and has decided to cut the number by close to half remaining with around 80 workers. This has also affected the airing of channels with some being scrapped off their channel guide.

Managing Director Ms Lydia Ndagire among others was of the victims of this exercise. On receiving the shocking news, others have deliberately resigned to avoid the embarrassment of being sucked. This includes; News Anchor Diana Kagere Mugerwa, Mukitale Moses, Nuliat Nambazira and Harriet Namuksa to mention but a few.

According to Uganda Journalists Union president, Ms. Lucy Anyango Ekadu, WBS TV station management has violated the laws stipulated under Uganda Employment Act.

She said, “The WBS management should have given workers a 30 days notice in lieu of the termination, and should have cleared workers salary arrears.”

However, news coming through is that through the station management, WBS has already sent in information to the concerned parties on how they are going to recieve their arrears.

From this we expect more unemployed people crowding the streets and may be strikes.
