Famous South African singer PJ Powers, real name Penelope Jane Dunlop, is set for a mega concert in Uganda.

The legendary South African singer will headline a charity concert organised by Girl Up Initiative Uganda, a youth-led community development organisation currently operating in Kampala that provides girls and young women with opportunities to thrive as leaders  in their communities through a holistic education and economic empowerment programmes.

Speaking at a press conference held at Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday, Monica Nyiraguhabwa, the Executive Director Girl Up Initiative Uganda, revealed that the concert is geared towards raising funds to support their different programmes.

“We are organising a charity benefit concert where South African singer PJ Powers will sing live,” said Monica Nyiraguhabwa. “Our organisation is dependant on foreign donors and to be able to raise money locally is something that will be very new for us and we are very excited. It will be a night to come together to celebrate our hard work and be part of a charitable cause.”

“PJ Powers is an inspirational woman who puts out music with a purpose. Her music is not for just entertainment but also empowering and that is why she is our ambassador,” she added.

Famous for songs like “Jabulani”, “There is an Answer”, “World In Union”,  and “Home to Africa” among others, PJ Powers, who first performed in Uganda about 14 years ago, is excited to be part of the charity concert.

“I first came to Uganda about 14 years ago,” she said. “The most excitement I have ever experienced on tour in Africa is when I come to Uganda. So, it was really easy for me to choose coming here again.”

“I am involved with an organisation in South Africa that is about empowering people for which I am the global ambassador. So, working with Girl Up is in synergy with this ambassadorial role.” She added.

The charity concert will be held on Friday, June 30 at Kampala Serena Hotel. Tickets will go for 100K (regular) and 5 million (table). Girl Up Initiative Uganda is organising the concert in conjunction with Content Connect Africa.
