Yego Night: Humble Beginnings Of An Urban Culture Soldiers On.

Gone are the days hip hop was alien and perceived as roguish. Over the years, the populace has grown to appreciate the art that has since penetrated mainstream. To keep pace with an increasing fan base of peculiar taste, theme nights like ”All black everything” , Kiwivuga poetry session, were a favourite but have since fallen.

Yego night, brainchild of Yego productions, a monthly meet of rappers and friends mingling with fans in a stimulating entertaining atmosphere, in its third edition held on Wednesday night proved its unwavering yet delicate determination to pick the debris from premature ruins of fallen theme nights and build an arts celebration, customized for the hip hop fans.

It was my first time. We arrived at 8:30pm, late for an event scheduled for 8pm earlier, owing the delay to the secluded venue, Route 256, a new joint with disturbing location description, ”opposite Lugogo arena”, though, it does not quite come close to that.

The crowd was sparse, consisting of rappers, radio personalities, fans and then ladies sat in groups as DJ Global kept the mood alive mixing latest American rap hits. Why not Ugandan, huh?

Serious business started at about 9:30pm with Forever Mc breaking the ice. The stage was then graced by bigwigs; Enygma, Tbro, Santanna, Mith, Lillian, Ruyonga and GNL… ooh yes, the line up was not short of novelties.

The atmosphere was adorable and lively as rappers and fans cheered on the performers fulfilling a long awaited moment.

Despite the star studded line up, the crowd was small but significant. Perhaps, the venue was too secluded. Could one blame the Champions League, the weather or limited publicity?

Like the hip hop genre, her events will sail too through the storms to reach the promised land where tickets sell out.

BOTTOM LINE: Yego Night boosts of a wealthy potential and experience to pick from to grow into a MUST ATTEND monthly festival, giving birth to an urban culture of sorts.
