9 Things you didn’t know about vibrators

Okay, let’s be honest: how much do you really know about your buzzing best friend? Whether you own a discreet vibrator, are a fan of Fifty Shades of Grey-style play or haven’t even brought yourself to try one out, we bet some of these facts will surprise you. Take a look at the 9 things you didn’t know about vibrators.

1 in 3 American women own at least 1 vibrator.
If you think you might be the only one in your group of friends that doesn’t own a self-pleasure device, then you might be right! It’s no longer than uncommon to own the little device that can help you achieve orgasm on your own–or even help enhance the sex between you and your partner.

3/4 of women require direct stimulation.
Is it any wonder that vibrators are more popular than ever? The latest findings show that 75% of us ladies need clitoral stimulation (ahem, thank you vibrators!) because only 1 in 4 can achieve orgasm through intercourse alone.

“Hysteria” originated as female sexual frustration.
As far back as the 13th century, women who were actually suffering from sexual frustration were diagnosed with and treated for “hysteria”. Although the term is currently used for people who have unmanageable emotional excess, back in the day it just meant we ladies needed to get some.

1883: the first vibrator was invented for medical use.
Originally, doctors treated women with “hysteria” with pelvic massage. Finally, a new method was developed to make the process easier. The vibrator was born! English physician Dr. Joseph Mortimer Granville patented the first electric vibrator for medical use.

1902: Hamilton Beach made the first in-home vibrator.
That’s right, the people who make that kitchen appliance you love also made the first ever vibrator for us ladies to enjoy in the home. While it looked a little scary, we commend them for recognizing that we’ll be needing to use these handy devices somewhere else besides the doctor’s office.

Women who use them have higher sexual function.
Despite fears that using a vibrator will make it impossible for you to climax during regular sex, studies have shown that women who use vibrators are more in tune with their own sexual needs and therefore tend to have healthier sex lives. That’s a good reason to start using the buzzing device, isn’t it?

It’s sort of true that religion & vibrators don’t mix.
If you’re afraid of trying a vibrator because you think your religious mami won’t approve, you’re not the only one. A survey found that women who had a higher degree of religiosity were less likely to use a vibrator.

Get an “electronic massage” to give yourself rosy cheeks.
That’s exactly what was advertised back in the 1920’s as the biggest advantage to using a vibrator. We’ve heard of blush and contouring, but having the Big O in order to get a rosy glow? That’s a new one! Of course, that’s not the worst reason to try the device that we’ve ever heard…

They actually do come in all shapes & sizes.
Sure, we may imagine vibrators in the shape of a man’s, ahem, junk, but they actually have a wide variety. From clitoral-only “bullet” style vibrators to cock rings that are meant to be used by a couple, there’s a lot to choose from. Plus, they’re really safe! It is rare that numbness, pain, irritation, inflammation, and abrasions are reported.
