Gonorrhea, also called the “clap” or “drip,” gonorrhea is a contagious Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
As an STD, it is transmitted most often through sexual contact with an infected person – from man to woman and from woman to man.
Sadly, it can also be transferred from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, labor or breastfeeding.
It is more prevalent among people aged 14 to 60 – sexually active age group.
The biggest scare of it all is that Gonorrhea CAN LEAD TO INFERTILITY in both men and women if untreated!!!
Here are the symptoms to look out for:
- Painful burning sensation during urination
- Discharge from penis or vagina
- Skin rashes
- Swollen/painful testicles (men)
- Pelvic pain (women)
- Lower abdomen pain
- Pain during sex (especially women)
- Frequent urge to urinate
A combination of any or all the above could be signals of Gonorrhea, which can sometimes be easily confused with a urinary tract or vaginal infection (UTI).
This is why, you need medical diagnosis and lab tests to really be sure. Unfortunately, sometime gonorrhea may cause no symptoms.
NOTE: Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotic but it is best to consult a doctor for medical advice.
