8 Relationship red flags you should never ignore

Many of us want very badly to find someone to have a good, loving relationship with. But when a relationship forms and progresses, sometimes we are so happy we fail to see the red flags.

Many people find themselves deep in an unhealthy relationship because they failed to see the signs early on. Whether you’re newly dating or have been together for years, you should be careful to not ignore any of these eight red flags:

1. They don’t treat you as a priority

In a good relationship, you should mean the world to your partner. They should do things to make you feel important and loved. Don’t brush it aside if you see your companion constantly putting other things (like work, friends or hobbies) before you.

2. They’re not interested in seeing your friends or family

If you’re just beginning your relationship, it’s natural to be hesitant about meeting each other’s family. But if your darling insists against being introduced to your friends and family after you’ve been together for a while, things might not last.

3. You’ve caught them lying to you

There is no lying in a strong, healthy relationship. Any lie is a red flag – no matter how big or small. Even if your partner lies about small things that don’t seem to matter too much, who’s to say the size of their lies won’t grow?

4. They talk negatively about you to others

Whether it’s behind your back or in front of you, your companion should never talk bad about you to others. If people in a healthy relationship have an issue with each other, they talk about it privately. If your partner speaks poorly about you at all (even in private), it’s time to find someone better.

5. They’re on their phone when you’re talking to them

Think about the times you flip out your phone to play around on social media. Most likely, this happens when you have nothing better to do. Now, think about what it means if you’re trying to talk to someone (especially someone you’re in a relationship with) and they pull out their phone. Companions who truly care for their sweetheart will be interested in what you have to say and won’t choose to scroll Instagram.

6. They’re your constant critic

You should hear sirens if your partner is frequently pointing out things that are wrong with you. You don’t deserve that kind of negativity – your partner should be your supporter, not your critic. In healthy relationships, compliments and encouragement will far outweigh criticism and disapproval.

7. They want to change you

Of course, a couple in a relationship should help each other grow into better people, but your companion should never tell you to change who you are. In a good relationship, both people love each other unconditionally despite their faults. In a bad relationship, your partner will try to tell you to change the way you do things.

8. They’re controlling

You’re in a partnership, but you’re still your own person. You should not have to ask your partner permission to do things. If they demand to know where you are and what you’re doing at all times, red sirens should go off in your head. In a strong relationship, companions should trust each other and not take away each other’s independence.
