5 Ways To Stop Stalking Your Ex On Social Media

One of the biggest problems that we face while moving on from a relationship is letting go. How do you stop waiting for that call, that conversation, looking at the face that’ll make it all go away? Add to it the omniscient presence of social media and you find yourself, against your better judgement, stalking your ex, checking his or her pictures and posts, trying to figure out if they are over you. Even though you know you won’t actually find any real answers there. Stalking your ex on social media might even grow to be a default habit where you simply log in, check their profile and log off, but the thing is … it’s unhealthy. Trying to keep track of their lives, so they will somehow, still be a part of yours, does not work. Even though we feel your pain because all of us have been there, the next time you feel the urge to log on to his or her profile, here’s what can help you take a step back.

1. Block The Profile

If you know that you won’t be able to resist stalking them, take the extreme step and block their profile. You can always unblock them and add them again if need be (should you ever become “friends”), but right now your focus needs to be on the fact that you don’t want easy access to them. Another thing you can do is get off social media yourself so that you don’t go online checking either their or their friend’s profiles. Think of all the free time you’ll have, and all the constructive things you could do. Take a music class, go to the gym, read …

2. Find A Replacement Habit

If you spend all your free time checking social media on your phone, find yourself a new activity instead. Every time you feel the urge to log on to social media, and check out his profile, do something else on your phone instead. Get yourself a new app, or put up a motivational wallpaper that’ll distract you and remind you to not stalk your ex.

3. Get A Stalking Jar

Most people have a swear jar, and you could use the same principal here. Each time you go to his profile, stop yourself from doing something that you really like, or put a Rs.50 note in a jar and then give the money away. Trust us, this helps.

4. Ask Your Friends For Help

If you find yourself checking out his profiles for a hint of whether or not he is missing you, and you want to stop, get your friends onboard. Each time you are with them, and you check his profile, get them to take your phone away, or better yet, if they catch you checking his profile more than five times in a week they get permission to delete your profile. Trust us, tough love helps.

5. Talk Yourself Out Of It

There is something psychologically stimulating about saying things out loud to yourself. Next time you find the urge to go to his profile, talk yourself out of it. Say this aloud: Going to his profile is only going to hurt me and I am not going to find anything useful here.
