5 Things you MUST get rid of after a breakup

Breakups are never easy, and even if you’ve only been together for a short time, there are always things lying around that will remind you of your relationship.

That’s part of the beauty of sharing love with someone but also one of the difficulties if you break up. I’m not saying that the moment you smell trouble you throw out or burn all the ties you had together.

If you’re hoping to heal from your breakup and keep your heart open to finding new loves, there are five things you should get rid of after the two of you have decided to part ways.

1. Your social media connection

You follow him on Twitter, have access to his Instagram stream, and you’re connected to him on Facebook. That spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E! You know if you don’t immediately get rid of those connections, you’re going to be stalking him at 4 in the morning or obsessing over who that person is in the photo with him. Save yourself the heartache, and get rid of those connections so you don’t have the urge to check out his constant updates.

2. His sweater

I don’t care how comfortable it is or how it still smells like him! You either need to give it back or give it away. It’s not going to help you get over the relationship if you’re constantly smelling his cologne and telling yourself you’re going to keep it to make him mad (which we know isn’t true). If you just can’t part with your boyfriend’s shirt, consider turning it into a dress to give it new life.

3.Your text messages

If you’re not ready to get rid of his contact information all together, at least make sure you get rid of all the text messages between the two of you. You know that on a sad night when you’re really feeling the breakup, instead of reading the newest self-help book, you’ll be reading all those messages from the beginning of your relationship to try to see where it all went wrong. You will probably not learn anything new, but you’ll certainly not move on re-reading it all.

4. That song

You know that song you have playing on repeat on your phone when you’re sitting alone in the dark? That one that reminds you of that time the two of you had a really good evening and you were happy? Delete it from your Spotify, iTunes, or whatever — now! Instead, swap out that memory song for a playlist that is built to make you happy.

5. The drama

Breakups are hard! Even if it’s not the first time you’ve moved on from a relationship, there will likely be some residual hurt feelings or conflicting emotions. Do your best to let go of the drama and move on — be kind to yourself and look forward instead of wishing things could have been different. Don’t spend your time being negative and let go of the guilt and all the drama.
