Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On Day 13, she posted:
“When I was on Teens Club, I think it was my 3rd year on the show and the chairman of the TV station Mr Gordon Wavamunno joined the staff to celebrate the station’s anniversary. Now in my years working there, I had never met him and had heard how he was such a tough man who could fire you if you did one single mistake.
So here I am at the anniversary party and am in line for the buffet, a gentleman comes to my side and says “can I cut in line please?” Without looking at who it was, I said NO lol. Anyway out of curiosity I turned to see who it was…yes it was the chairman himself, I froze with fear. I walked away and sat somewhere far and forgot about the food, I was praying he didn’t get a good look at me so that I don’t get fired.
An hour later, he was leaving the party he saw me and came to me, he said hello and a few other things but I was too scared to understand. The man stayed there and didn’t move, so I gathered my thoughts and told him, sorry I was rude earlier sir, and I would like to save my job please. He laughed so hard and said it was okay. He told me that he watches the show once in a while and thinks I have talent and should focus. I told him TV was a passion of mine and I wanted to expand it further…his advise — what I have given you is the platform to do that, if you sit among teens every weekend and expect a sign of opportunity, it wont come. You must do more to stand out and be memorable so that I dont just remember you as the girl who wanted to eat before me.
I will never forget that day because to me, its the day I became better and I saw the sky as no limit. Food for thought, are you playing it safe at work and stay in a corner and just do your job nothing more, nothing less and expect that results will change? Its the people with that extra skill and extra zeal that make it further than their eyes see. Its important to ask yourself, how can I be better than I was yesterday? What do I bring to my workplace that sets me apart from the many? So, work at it, be memorable!”
