Today I want to tell you about a man who helped me so much at the start of my career. I was in the last year of Teens Club, and I wanted to join radio, the late Banji of Sanyu Fm suggested I go meet with Ben Mwiine who was the head of programming at Sanyu FM. He brushed me off as a teen coming in to look for a job and didn’t take more than 5 mins in that meeting, but he asked me to do a demo and maybe bring it to him.

I didn’t know where to start and I asked around for advice on how to compile a demo and no one helped me. Then a cousin told me that the famous Roger Mugisha had set up an audio studio and she overheard that he was looking for voice talent.

I took a chance and went to the studio, 3 hours of waiting and he finally saw me, he looked at this kid and wasn’t sure, but he let me go into the studio booth and read a script and boom! his face lit up and he said “wow, you don’t look like your voice” I ended up doing more than one script and he paid me for each script full price even though I was a new voice.

I had a chat with him and told him about my radio dreams, he simply told me to be patient and with time it will happen. He continued to recommend my voice to other producers and I got some good work.

For about a year, I was living off voice overs and he always spared time to teach me on how to better myself and my voice and the day I joined Capital FM, I came to him and was so excited to share the news.

He was happy for me but he had a conversation with me and told me that the platform I had now, would be so big and I was going to do great, but I need to be careful because the industry wont be easy and I need to watch out and take care of myself, he also told me that now, we were going to be peers. I thought he was crazy, because I never imagined I would ever get to work with people I looked up to like him, but my destiny was being revealed through him.

I appreciate that to this day, he has never once asked for my gratitude. We now work together as peers in the industry but he continues to respect me and is so humble you would not even know what he did for my career. Today is a day of gratitude for me.”

30 Days of Flavia Tumusiime: A complicated personal life and health scare inspired the series.

Flavia Tumusiime

Flavia Tumusiime has finally concluded the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. Here’s her last piece of advice on day 30:

Bell All Star Tour is coming to your town. Click here to find out when.

“I can almost recall in detail, the morning I wrote the first post of #30daysofflavia. I had woken up with so much determination nothing could hold me back. See, the reason for it started last year December, I had just had a tremendous year, my work life was great, family healthy, personal life good and friendships growing. Then I entered 2015 with a plan…I have always shared how am such a planner.

I had it all figured out but you know God always laughs at our plans. I went through a tough start of the year, a complicated personal life and a health scare. I thought nothing could get worse from here. And after all the frustration and complaining, I prayed as much as I could and still no answer.

I was thriving in my workspace but because in my mind I wanted so much more in every aspect of my life, I didnt stop to appreciate what I had now. So I decided to practise what I always tell people..”count your blessings.”

Its true we always say that but not practise it. I decided to share pieces of my experiences that atleast one person out there would know they are not alone and that no matter the situation…it shall pass. I have been overwhelmed with the love and stories of appreciation and inspiration shared in my inbox.

God bless each of you for changing my life in someway too, what started as me inspiring others to have a reason to try and be their best turned out to be people helping me as well and we have lifted each others spirits throughout each day.

My last word of advice is..the bigger the burden/challenge, the bigger the blessing so hold on.”

30 Days of Flavia Tumusiime: How a ‘helper’ almost wrecked her radio dream.

Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On day 29, she posted:

Bell All Star Tour is coming to your town. Click here to find out when.

“It was a Saturday afternoon, my first day on Capital Fm(not first day on radio though, since I had done 6 months with Hot 100). I was so nervous, maybe because I wasn’t sure of the audience or myself.

I turn on the mic for my first voicebreak and as I begin to talk, a guy walks in(I had seen him many times very close to the boss and imagined he was one of the managers) he switched off the mic in the middle of my talk and said to me “you introduce the station name, the show then your name, not how you did it, now try again” and he switched on my mic again…I was in shock and wasn’t sure what had just happened but I thought, if this is a manager, I should just take the advice. I did the show till the end but that disruption had broken me down, I didn’t think I was good or would manage the job, I thought I had screwed up on the very first day so why would they keep me around.

When I came back for my next show, I spoke to the programms manager and told him about his fellow manager who had scared me on the first day…his reaction was priceless. He laughed so hard and told me that guy is not a manager, he just helps out where I need him to, he is not permanently with the station.

I was in shock, my boss also said it was my fault for not knowing everyone and their role at the workplace and in my life and work. He said, that if I had taken the time to know who and where they mattered, I wouldn’t have been that broken up about a situation like that and would have handled it better.

In life, don’t let those who don’t see your vision drive you from it or pull you into their direction. Know who is who on your journey and their pourpose.”
