Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On day 20, she posted:
“On Saturday night, I was out with some friends and on our way home we drove past someone I know, we said hello and I remembered how him andIi met.
The story goes back to 2003. I was part of straight talk as a school project and they had a competition of sort, they asked us to get information about how HIV/AIDS affected young people and also take a questionnaire to 5 adults and have them pledge to take an HIV test.
I was ambitious, instead of going just among the teaching staff like my peers, I went to companies near my school (Kitante hill school). My first stop was Capital FM. Here is a 15 year old in her school uniform asking people about their HIV status haaha, oh gosh!
So after being brushed off by so many people this one gentleman in sales comes to me and says he will give me 5 mins to say what I want to say and leave. I agreed, used my 5 mins to convince him of my project and when I was done he told me, you are too young to be talking to me about things you only read about, but I will give it to you, the confidence you have doesn’t match your age.
He then told me, go to school and focus, when you turn 18, come back here and if am still working here, I will take you to the programs director and see if you can be a radio presenter.
Imagine this is a conversation I ignored and even when years later, I was being hired at capital, it wasn’t because of him, but I now sit back and remember how through him, my destiny was revealed, because at 18 surely, I was working at capital. Our destiny is always revealed to us in some way.”
