Long Distance can be the best or the worst thing that can ever happen to your relationship. The success of a long distance relationship majorly depends on how you take it and how you react to it. It is utterly important to stay positive in such a relationship.
Nobody says it is going to be easy — the extra distance makes many things unachievable. Things could get complicated, and you could get sad and lonely at times. However, the extra distance also makes the simplest things the sweetest. You are a thousand times more thankful about simple things we take for granted otherwise. Like, being able to see each other every day through Skype if not in reality.
Without spending time together on a regular basis, we miss out on all the little details that help to define our partner, that help us try and do more for them and this relationship. Though, there is no definite way to a successful long distance relationship, but we believe there are a few things that are generally a lot more beneficial for any long term relationship.
1. COMMUNICATION
Communication, communication and communication, I cannot emphasise on this word enough. Know that in a long distance relationship, communication is the key! You are not meeting them physically. Every time you explain them something, you have to draw a picture through your words, for them and the same goes for them. So be very careful with the words and things you decide to communicate. It is always good to share how you feel about a certain thing and keep your mind open for any complaint coming your way. Regular feedback will help the both of you be better at this. Stay positive and keep on sharing
2. INVOLVING EACH OTHER IN EVERYTHING YOU DO
As ridiculous as it sounds, sending each other pictures and video messages from wherever you are will give your partner the feeling they might have gotten if they would have been with you. Share details of what you do and how you do something so it is easier for your partner to feel connected to you at all times. Talk about your day, and ask about your partner’s. Talk about the details, however unimportant you think they seem. Over-share, to be precise.
3. TAKING OUT TIME EVERYDAY
Committing yourself to someone is one thing, committing yourself in a long distance relationship is a whole another level of commitment. It is extremely easy for doubts to creep into such relationships, thus, do not leave room for doubts. Commit to a certain amount of time you talk to each other for and then stick to it. Fulfilling these small little practices will help in reminding you both of the efforts you and your partner are putting in to make things easy for the two of you.
These three things will always help you stay close to your partner. They will keep you and them involved in each other’s daily lives. You start sharing ton extent that it feels like, something happening to them is equally happening to you.
These might not happen today, tomorrow or even in a week’s time. This small little habits require time and consistency. Once you get them right, yours becomes an exemplary relationship for others.
