14 Valuable Lessons Only A Heartbreak Can Teach You

We’ve all had our hearts broken at some point or the other. We’ve cried. We’ve been drunk. We’ve drunk-dialed the exes. We’ve cried some more. We’ve cursed life. We’ve called it unfair. And so has everyone else who has gone through it.

But no matter how awful you might feel about breaking up with someone, there’s no denying that a broken relationship or losing someone can teach you a million little things. Read on as we bring you 15 lessons only a heartbreak can teach you.

1. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

You can choose to cry for as long as you want to. You can listen to sad songs and feel terrible about yourself. Or you can pick yourself up and start again. It’s all up to you. With love and loss comes emotional stress, but facing the reality does bring you back on track.

2. Pretending to be okay consumes a lot of energy.

If you are not okay then you are not okay. You don’t need to pretend to be alright, because when you act fake you are the one judging yourself and eventually you’ll give up.

3. You need more than love to make a relationship work.

You need timing. You need respect, maturity, a comfort level and a lot of space. You don’t only need love.

4. Feelings are temporary. Don’t trust them.

Feelings change every few hours. You will be angry one moment and desperate the next. You would want to call your ex and abuse him and after a few hours apologise. A better idea is to feel everything and let it go.

5. Nothing is permanent.

Neither the love, nor the person or the heartbreak. People change, situations change and so do you. That is how this world works.

6. Life goes on whether you’re ready or not.

Heartbreak or no heartbreak, life doesn’t stop for anyone. You may want to be in bed all day hiding under a quilt. But you’ll be expected to work, deadlines will remain, your friends will continue to party and your parents will still scold you. Unless you are Varun Dhawan from Badlapur who’s only purpose of living is revenge. Come on, we are all better than that.

7. Heartbreak makes you aware of your own weaknesses.

A heartbreak will introduce you to your most insecure parts. It will also teach you how to cope with them. Isn’t it good to be self aware?

8. ‘I cannot live without you’ is not true.

I cannot live without you is  just a phrase we associate without a heartbreak. No one stops living their life. You don’t stop eating, going to work or meeting your friends.

9. The beauty in life is moving through a heartbreak, not stopping at it.

Heartbreak is not the end of the world. Period.

10. It is more important to be happy than to be right.

There are times we get caught up with doing the ‘right’ thing forgetting what we really want to do. If you are not happy in a relationship, it’s better to end it, no matter how wrong it may seem.

11. You are stronger than you know.

You’ll get over it. In fact, you will have several other heartbreaks and each one will teach you something valuable. You’ll learn to be brave. You will learn to be self adequate. Most importantly, you’ll move on.

12. Sometimes, break ups happen for the better.

They allow you to breathe. Relationships are meant to make you grow as a person, but if they are ruining you, you’d better call it quits. It might be better for you and your partner.

13. Falling in love isn’t easy, but coming out of it is.

Love can happen twice, even thrice and and infinite number of times. Falling in love isn’t easy, but coming out of it is. People grow out of love. It happens and it’s absolutely normal.

14. Heartbreak prepares you for the next relationship, and makes you better at it.

Every time your heart breaks, it makes you stronger and wiser. The next time you decide to be with someone, don’t make the same mistakes. You try to be honest, have your expectations under control, be realistic and most importantly be the most genuine version of yourself.

Next time you cry over a break up, remember to think of the things you learnt from your past relationship.
