11 Reasons Dating A Divorced Dude Is A Great Idea

1. He has a demonstrated ability to commit.

Sure, his last relationship didn’t work out, but at least you know he finds the concept of growing old and growing ear hair with the same woman not just un-terrifying, but downright desirable. You’re not going to wake up next to him after six perfect dates and discover he has “a philosophical issue with the institution” or some other well-rehearsed iteration of “Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man.”

2. He’s likely an optimist.

Divorce sucks, yet there’s a decent chance that he endured it because he knew deep down that something better was on the other side—possibly you. Gotta love that.

3. Divorced guys try harder.

See reason #2 for reference. No one wants to go through that twice if he can help it.

4. He’s got a signature dish.

Every dude knows women love a guy who can cook. Even if he’s no Food Network star, he’ll have at least one meal—with more than one course—that doesn’t involve the microwave that he’s been practicing on every woman he’s dated since his breakup. That means you’ll get a good meal out of it at the very least.

5. You’re getting Guy, 2.0.

Your predecessor test drove the beta version and worked out a lot of the bugs. Whether it’s how to be open about his feelings, not to leave his grubby stubble in the sink, or the value of furniture that’s not made of milk crates, you benefit from his exes’ efforts. (A thank you note, however, is unnecessary.)

6. His big regrets are your best friends.

No doubt there are mistakes he will be very, very careful not to make again. Practice makes (something somewhat less far from) perfect.

7. He doesn’t expect perfect.

No one should, of course, but more than a few Prince Charmings have walked down the aisle with delusions that his bride was the perfect mashup of Disney princesses. Now he’s learned that we’ve all got our ugly stepsister moments—which is a lot more realistic.

8. And you get points simply for not being her.

If that marriage of his ended badly, you are a miracle, an angel, a revelation. Simply because you didn’t do—and won’t, right?—the exact crappy thing she did. And even if they’re still friends, or have to deal with each other for some reason, it’s a safe bet she still can push his buttons in a hot second. You don’t even know where those buttons are yet. Total win for you, especially since he’s even more likely to cut you some slack. At least for a while.

9. You know he’s not infertile.

If he has children, that is. Plus, you get to preview what kind of a dad he’d be. Try before you buy!

10. He’s in full possession of all his baggage.

All men—whether they’ve been married or not—drag around an entire American Tourister luggage set. But divorced guys are at least aware of it, which goes a long way. Plus they tend to be more accepting of the teeny, tiny little carry on you might also be toting around.

11. Divorced guys really do move on.

Especially if they have someone who makes them much happier to move on with.
