Rotaract Earth Initiative is an initiative engineered by Rotaractors in Uganda to address Climate Change, Food Insecurity and Primary Health Care.
Though its core steering committee are in Rotary, this initiative is open to all who are passionate about the environment and bettering it through pragmatic and proactive solutions.
We will be having our pilot project on the 4th of April 2015. The key activities scheduled to take place are a medical camp in Nakasongola Health Zone 4 and Tree planting in Katugo Forest Reserve in Kasagala.
The land on which the forest is to be planted is a gazetted central forest reserve in Katugo, Nakasongola. Thus its government land and not private land. The land is demarcated and protected by the National Forestry Authority (NFA). We chose this type of land to avoid ownership issues in the future.
Our partner National Forestry Authority shall supply one million trees (1,000,000) which we anticipate to plant and also give to Rotaract clubs and groups of non-rotary youth that have fulfilled the Initiative’s demands of reclaiming, re-afforestation and conservation.
There are plans to teach the community to be environmentally aware too. This shall be done through encouraging tree planting in their communities and also use and provision of energy efficient stoves to save on the amount of wood used to save tree cut.
This initiative simply conveys the message that forests are central to our efforts to fight climate change, whether at the level of global policy or as local initiatives. We must all rally behind this call for actions and changes.
The Medical camp will be running concurrently in Nakasongola Health Zone 4 where medical personnel that have volunteered will be diagnosing and treating eye, ear, throat and other illnesses. We will also be sensitizing the community on proper hand washing methods and communicable disease preventive strategies.
We therefore urge all that can attend this Easter break, to join us by registering just 30,000/= Ugx which will cater for your transport, meals and accommodation.
Rotaract is about service through fellowship, we will therefore have a fun filled sleep over in Nakasongola starting Thursday 2nd April and carry out the project activities on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th April after which participants set off back for Kampala in time to enjoy their Saturday evening or rest.
