Admit it: You saw the headline and snickered. But this sh*t is real, man.
Apps and handling your “business” go together like, well, nobody’s business. For proof, look no further than the study that once found 16% of cellphones havepoop on them. And, like all universal human truths, this one’s even been immortalized in a song: Paul the Trombonist’s catchy — and oh-so-aptly titled — “Playing With Your Phone While Sitting on the Toilet.”
But let’s be real: Not just any app will do when you doo-doo, and that even goes for some of our favorites. Take Twitter, for example. Great app. Full of information, links and longreads. But getting sucked down that rabbit hole can be problematic, and not just because you’ll be late to your next appointment — too much time on the pot can lead to hemorrhoids. And no one wants those.
No, what we need here are the easy, breezy apps. The apps that allow us to like and engage with minimal effort in limited time. Below, find seven of our favorites to help optimize your time on the can — so don’t say we never did anything for you, dear reader.
1. Instagram
This is the epitome of maximum participation with minimal effort. You can fit an incredible number of likes and comments into the time a bathroom break takes. Feeling adventurous? Crop, filter and post a brand new pic right from the pot. Live a little, right? It is 2014, after all.
2. Tinder
The swipe-who-you-like hookup app caught on like wildfire in 2013, and apparently people look for digital love in the least-expected places. “I don’t use it,” insists one Mashable staffer, “but I’ve always been shocked to learn how much Tinder-ing goes on in bathrooms.” Just remember: Swipe before you wipe.
3. Words With Friends
Words With Friends is great for the stall. Take your mind off the business at hand with a little healthy word-game competition. Many online also believe Words With Friends is Paul Rudd’s iPad app of choice while on the porcelain throne in This Is 40. So it’s got that going for it, which is nice.
4. Airpnp
Here’s a new offering that helps users find bathrooms in crowded cities, or post their own to be used for a fee. For the ambitious multitaskers out there who want to plot their next potential strike while simultaneously carrying out the mission at hand. It’s still only in web form, though, so you’ll have to go to airpnp.co in your mobile web browser to get started.
5. Pinterest
Visual and simple, Pinterest is a natural fit here. Says one Mashable staffer: “There’s minimal thinking required and nothing takes your mind off of gross bathroom stuff like planning your fictional wedding.”
6. QuizUp
Much like Words With Friends, this trivia app introduces some competition to your sacred moment. But QuizUp offers challenges in a variety of categories. So use your next bathroom trip to build yourself into a trivia-night legend at your watering hole of choice. No one will ever guess the secret to your success.
7. Google Maps
Confused? Mashable‘s real-time news editor Brian Ries is about to blow your mind: “If you consistently take a screenshot every time you take a seat, you’ll end up, at the end of the year, with a photo gallery/map of all your bathroom breaks in the previous year,” he points out. #Whoa, you guys.
