The truth is, Ugandan Hip Hop music was laying haplessly on its deathbed choking threw an oxygen mask. Then it got its prescription before its candle burnt out. It got Edwin Ruyonga, formerly Krukid and, furthermore, formerly a secular music rapper who is now equipped with Godly quips and Bible verses and holy bars. He comes off with a new single “Muhuliire (Y’Heard)?“.
The title “Muhuliire” is loosely translated as “Are you hearing?” The song starts off lazily, like it hit a plateau with lazy beats that seem to borrow its rhythm from “Tutuuse” or the infamous Snoop Dogg’s “Drop Like It’s Hot” Thereafter, Ruyonga quickly falls in, trying not to confuse your mind and when he opens his mouth to rap, Ruyonga takes the darned song home. He unwraps it by introducing himself to the masses. “Ugandan ambassador. The New, Spokesperson for Africa…” Then he rattles on with self-praise Hip Hop rappers have mastered and are fond of doing.
“Muhuliire” is not your let’s-hit-the-dance-floor kind of tune. No. It is a layback kind of tune that seems to bring freshness to the soul. Ruyonga comes off with these catchy punch lines that seem to leave you paused in your chair with your earphones plugged absentmindedly in your ears.
He has, lately, turned the nose of his music car and headed west. From Ija Nkutware to Tukutendereze, Ruyonga is doing more of Runyakitara which he, surprisingly, does justice without sounding as a Chinese speaking Rukiga; the words ooze out effortlessly. On “Muhuliire” he is asking haters, whoever, people out there, whether they have heard him, whether they have understood him after his pile of self-praise. And he lifts off the song, pulls it on the highway and maintains the same pace till the last word. It is a good song. Produced by The Genre.
Like its title suggests, listen to this song and you will privately doff your crocked hat for Edwin Ruyonga.
