29-year-old Ugandan comedian Salvador who is currently doing adverts for big companies like Club, DSTV and MTN Uganda has explained why he is in a committed relationship with Club beer.
“You know I used to take a certain beer brand before. Even the Club beer people knew it. They tried to convince me to take theirs. But then I went to the beer I used to drink to ask for sponsorship and they tossed me for a month,” Salvador explained how he got addicted to drinking Club beer. “Then Club beer people saw me and asked: “What are you doing here?” You know their offices are both in Luzira. It was embarrassing. I told them I wanted sponsorship. I sold them my concept and in the evening, I received a call. I was told to go to their office the next day. When I got there, they told me “this is what we are giving you: media, branding …” I used to wonder why so many people run to Club. They support artistes.”
He also explained how Club beer helped him stage the Africa Laughs show. “Actually, you say that I am a drunkard because of what Club did for me. I had changed the date of the show [Africa Laughs, which was last year] five times. And you know a guy like Basket Mouth is so busy yet I kept telling him the dates of the show had changed! I want you to write this down: I will never forget what Club beer did for me. They are the people’s choice,” Salvador said.
Salvador then hinted on the adverts that he is doing for other companies. There has been a rumour that MTN and DSTV are using him for their marketing campaigns because he is cheap. Salvador trashed the rumours saying that Companies scramble to work with him because he is good at what he does.
“I am doing the adverts because I am good. Let me tell you about that DStv ad. They didn’t want a South African [to do it]. People auditioned. I have an agent in South Africa who told the DStv people about me. They asked me to send a demo – I don’t usually send demos but this money was good – and when they saw it, they said I was their guy. As for the relationship with MTN, I’m on retainer. I’m their official MC,” Salvador defended himself.
