Local musician Bobi Wine has spoken out on the now turned controversial topic – a Rolex, a local snack popularly sold by the roadside.
Speaking about Uganda’s tourism potential, the “Aidah” singer opined that a rolex is not reason enough for tourists to come to Uganda, and advised the Minister of Tourism to consider more effective ways of promoting the tourism sector like arts and culture.
This comes after he spotted a poster for an upcoming Disney movie about a Ugandan chess prodigy flying high in Hollywood during his recent travels. He said:
“After so much bad publicity for our country Uganda on the international stage, am proud to see our name finally featuring in a positive way. Am even more proud to see that it’s a Ghetto Story from ‘Dangala Katwe’ which I believe will be a major inspiration to the ghetto youth and ghetto talent not only in Uganda but all over the world. Queen Of Katwe is flying high on the billboards of Hollywood.
To our Minister of Tourism Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda, arts and culture are a much more effective way of promoting our country’s tourism sector rather than ‘Rolex’ coz Chapati is Indian bread and eggs are not exclusively Ugandan. So, in my opinion the art of rolling them together wouldn’t be reason for any tourist to come and see.
Preserve the Uganda National Cultural Centre National Theatre and you will see more of this or better still, promote arts and culture at all levels.”
