President Museveni

By Robert Kayindi James

H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni once again came to the rescue of Uganda’s sportsmen as he funded the national boxers for a trip to Doha, Qatar for the World Boxing Championship that also doubles as the Olympics qualifiers.

A contingent of 3 boxers, one team coach and two officials made the trip on Sunday night to beat the deadline but they should have been traveling on Friday but couldn’t make it due to financial constraints.

The dream for playing at the world level for the boxers once again comes to pass thanks to President Museveni’s funding that covered all the expenses that included an air ticket and upkeep of $2520 (about Shs9M) in cash for each member.

The surprise package was delivered by the sports minister, Charles Bakkabulindi on Sunday morning.

“The only way you can thank the President is by performing well and return with medals. Don’t rely on judges’ points, go for the knockout,” the minister said.

Traveling Contingent:

Boxers: Ssemitala (Bantam), Abdul Hassan (lightweight) and Fazil Juma Kaggwa (light fly)
Coach: Dick Katende
Officials: Fred Kavuma and Catherine Ninsiima.
