Music Video Review: Kuzaala Kujagaana by Irene Namatovu

Are you a traditionalist? Are you drawn to traditional regalia, notions and all? Are you a Muganda who can recite the Buganda creed in your sleep, effortlessly without spewing gibberish? Look no further because Irene Namatovu’s ‘Kuzaala Kujagaana’ will drag you to the right abode. De Nu Eagles’ singer comes with a new video which has gone viral. I want to think Mengo Government premier Peter Mayiga should use it as his ringtone. Or it should be a soundtrack to the brick-collecting economic activity (etoofali).

They brought forth traditional dancers who are, if you are keen enough, good at dancing traditional dances without coming off as Jamaican ratchet girls doing ballet. They are well choreographed. They wiggle their waists, not like Jason Derulo though. They clad in traditional attire and they wobble on the floor like a waddle of penguins. Stomping the ground as they dance, wiggling their midsections. Clearly, they looked to have fun with the whole process. It pelts on a high tempo and it was mirrored in the video.

Irene Namatovu, herself, leads the cast of dancers, dancing as though she is boneless, like she is not married. What will tickle your fancy and catch your eye in this video is its setting. It is shot in the wilderness, somewhat. And there, the Buganda culture crawls from Mengo and comes to fore. Everything in the video reeks and oozes Buganda. The kingdom gods must have thrown a party at its release. The only missing thing is the sight of the Kabaka, Ssemakokilo and multitudes of people begging to rebuild shrines. However, it remains flawless. Perfectly executed. It is one heck of a video that won’t quench your visual thirst, especially if you’re a Muganda. You will watch, unblinkingly, your fingers hovering over the repeat button. And I am not trying to drag the unpleasant stench of tribalism in your nostrils, Kuzaala Kujagaana is an alright video. It oozes delight and cultural bliss. And seeing everyone dancing with a wide grin on their face on a high tempo traditional beat brings happiness to the soul.We have a good video on our hands, ladies and gentlemen.
